That’s the lowest definite-renewal rate of any value segment.

Here’s what that means: the most loyal segment in your book is now the most likely to leave. Most carriers will miss the trend until it shows up unmistakably on their retention report. By then, the customer has already started shopping around, and it’s often too late to do anything that could bring them back.

But there’s something you can do to prevent this proactively: look at your demographic data. It can tell you who’s about to walk away, well before it shows up glaringly on any internal report.

Why Retention Deserves the Same Rigor as Acquisition

Most strategic planning inside a carrier focuses on growth. Your existing customer book typically gets reviewed through longevity, claims, and premium data, but only rarely through current demographic data. That leads to blind spots.

J.D. Now that’s an expensive blind spot.

Industry estimates commonly put the cost of acquiring a new insurance customer at seven to nine times the cost of retaining one. Every retention point you protect now is cheaper than the new business you’d need to replace it.

The good news: insurers can turn the same demographic precision they use to find new customers around to view the book they already have.

Audit the Book You Already Have

Think about what’s changed in your customers’ households since you first wrote their policies: someone added a teen driver; someone built an accessory dwelling unit to supplement their income; or someone’s multigenerational household grew as they started caring for aging parents.

These represent major life changes, ones where a customer may begin to rethink what their current policy offers them. None of these moments show up in a longevity report, either. It only shows up in deep demographic information, such as current household composition and life-stage data. These are measurements that can be included on the reports and datasets you get from EASI.

Using EASI Demographics data in combination with analysis tools, you can run block-group-level demographic profiles against your in-force book and compare them to current five-year estimates and scored segment data. You’ll be able to answer three questions your retention dashboard can’t:

Which segments are now operating outside the loss-cost relativities you filed?

Which territories are showing loss-ratio drift that doesn’t match their filed territory factor?

Which segments are showing non-renewal patterns before the rest of the book does?

The answers to these questions will help you in two ways:

Defensively, you get a ranked list of segments to re-underwrite, re-price, or proactively retain, before a competitor with finer product focus gets there first.

Offensively, you get a read on cross-sell opportunities the next renewal cycle wouldn’t otherwise surface, like the auto policyholder whose household just bought a home, or the homeowner whose household just added an adult driver.

Price the Household, Not the Policy

Being proactive with an in-force book helps identify retention risks before most insurers would realize they are there. It also helps multi-line carriers fix an approach they still get wrong: pricing auto, home, and life for one customer as if each belongs to three different customers, each with a different rating plan, actuarial team, and set of demographic inputs.

Why don’t your internal teams talk to each other when they know it’s a single household? Households contain multitudes. They reflect different risks and different needs. A 42-year-old with a new teen driver and a recently finished basement remodel is one household generating correlated signals across auto frequency, homeowner exposure, and life underwriting, not three unrelated risks.

Carriers that read the household as a whole get sharper segmentation in every line, using shared household composition and life-stage data across auto, home, and life alike. It also protects your most valuable customers, today and tomorrow.

J.D. Power found that bundled homeowners retain at roughly 95%, compared to 85% for non-bundlers. Over time, that ten-point gap can quickly grow: over five years, the bundled book keeps about three-quarters of its customers, while the non-bundled book keeps less than half. Pricing precision at the household level is what protects that advantage when premium volatility would otherwise break it.

Design for Loyalty From the Start

Retention isn’t only about catching risk in your existing book. It’s also about writing policies for households that actually fit your products in the first place. A customer whose risk exposure was never well-served by the policy they bought is always going to look elsewhere. All it takes to trigger that consideration is one change, like their premium going up or a change in their needed coverage.

According to the National Association of REALTORS®, multigenerational households accounted for 17% of all 2024 home purchases, yet most homeowner products still assume single-family dynamics.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, gig and independent workers now make up roughly 10.2% of the U.S. labor force. Yet standard personal auto policies generally exclude commercial use, leaving many of them underinsured for how they actually drive.

Caregiver, widowed, boomerang, and single-adult households are similarly identifiable in demographic data …and similarly underserved. Mapping these cohorts at the block-group level and finer shows you where they cluster, how fast they’re growing, and which distribution partners already reach them.

You can then target them with options that cater to their shifting needs. A household whose policy actually reflects how they live has a lot less reason to shop around next renewal.

Retention Starts Before It Shows up on the Dashboard

These three plays run on the same underlying data: household composition, life-stage indicators, current estimates, five-year forecasts, geographic profiles, and scored segments.

Run separately, they’re useful. Run together (feeding the same current data into your book audits, household pricing, and product targeting), they compound.

The insurers pulling ahead on retention aren’t reacting faster to the same dashboard everyone else is watching.
